The Edinburgh Larder

Another super-convenient gem, just a few meters up the hill from our front door.

The Edinburgh Larder does great breakfasts / brunches / lunches with an emphasis on seasonal local ingredients from ethical suppliers.

Blackfriars

Blackfriars is our much-loved local and as it's only a short stumble down the street there are no excuses for not visiting.

It consists of a bar and restaurant next door to each other (and linked by a corridor underneath the building so make sure you turn the right way out of the loos!)

The bar is very chilled out and convivial. You can almost always get a seat, and can converse without having to bellow over loud music. They have a small but carefully chosen, and ever-changing, selection of beers (as well as wines / whiskeys etc.) and the bar snacks are great (the pork pies are to die for!)

If you want a full meal then just head next door to the restaurant which has been getting some great reviews ever since it opened earlier this year.

Breakfast

Broughton Delicatessen - does a great breakfast

Scott Monument

Climb the 287 winding steps to the top of the Scott Monument for magnificent views across the whole city and surrounding countryside.

Great thing to do at the beginning of the trip to orient yourself in Edinburgh.

Mother India

Mother India's just off South Bridge and does brilliant, tapas-style, Indian food. It also does takeout if you fancy an evening in.

Scottish National Gallery

Even if you only pop in for 10 minutes you should visit the National Gallery.

There's so much to see that you can get a bit overwhelmed. However, most trips through Edinburgh take you more-or-less past the gallery and entry is free so my strategy is to pop in for brief visits to my favourite paintings in passing.

There are too many gems to list them all but I love the (very coy) Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by Singer Sargent.

There's also the much reproduced Skating Minister, a stunning Rembrant self-portrait and all sorts of Boticellis, Van Goghs, Reubens etc!
