Even if you only pop in for 10 minutes you should visit the National Gallery.

There's so much to see that you can get a bit overwhelmed. However, most trips through Edinburgh take you more-or-less past the gallery and entry is free so my strategy is to pop in for brief visits to my favourite paintings in passing.
There are too many gems to list them all but I love the (very coy) Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by Singer Sargent.
There's also the much reproduced Skating Minister, a stunning Rembrant self-portrait and all sorts of Boticellis, Van Goghs, Reubens etc!
